Summer Rhythms, Simple Acts
I really enjoy the rhythm of summer - the long days that invite more gatherings, the chance to sneak away for some rest and relaxation with friends and family, and all the festivals, fairs, and fun activities that fill up the calendar.
While it's easy to get caught up in the adventure of it all, summer is also a great time to stay grounded in service. Here are three simple, meaningful ways to keep living out your faith during this season:
1. Support the Food Pantry
Every time you go shopping, pick up one extra item to donate to the food pantry, big or small. It’s a small act that makes a big difference. It also helps shift your perspective: you’ll find yourself feeling more grateful for what’s in your own cart and more mindful of those who don’t have the luxury of choosing their groceries.
2. Reach out and Reconnect
Take 10 minutes to do something thoughtful you've been meaning to do: make that phone call, write a note to a family member, send a quick voice message to a friend you haven’t seen in a while. You do have the time, I promise, and the impact could be bigger than you realize.
3. Practice Small Acts of Gratitude
One hot day, while I was working the back of a garbage truck, an older man came out of his house, moving as quickly as he could. I braced myself—usually when someone comes out, it’s to complain about a missed can, a bin not being put back in the right spot, or my personal favorite: “The truck’s too loud.”
But not this time. He looked at me and asked if I wanted something to drink, then handed me a can of Mountain Dew. Not the most refreshing on a blazing day, but the gesture meant the world. His concern stayed with me. Find a way to bless someone this week with a small act of kindness. You never know what it might mean to them.
I really hope you are also enjoying all that summer has to offer. Keep serving. Keep smiling. And if you bless someone and get invited to a barbecue … well, that’s just holy bonus points.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Tim
