Principles for Worship
Fall 2026 – Spring 2027
Based on the text Principles of Worship, Augsburg Press. Copies will be available in the bookstore to purchase for $10 beginning in late August 2026. See our display in the narthex, right outside the sanctuary.
One of the chief documents coming out of the Reformation Era was the Augsburg Confession – a document that attempted to define what the church is and what it does.
Article VII of that document states:
It is taught among us that one holy Christian Church will be and remain forever. This is the assembly of all believers among whom the Gospel is preached in its purity and the holy sacraments are administered according to the Gospel.
It was the 16th century, and the one Roman Catholic Church was being divided up between Lutherans and Episcopalians and Moravians and a host of other mini denominations.
Lutherans wanted to say that no matter how much the church is divided up, there remains one church and that church is a group of people who listen to the Gospel and administer the sacraments.
In other words, the church is the church when it worships.
To look at the worship of the church, we will be using a study guide called Principles for Worship. This study attempts to look at everything that is “core” to what we experience in worship. From Language and Music to Preaching and the Spaces in which we worship, this study will help us navigate what is central as we gather together to praise God each week.
Classes will begin in September and run through the spring of 2027. Please join us in one of several different study opportunities to learn more about the centrality of worship in our lives.
