If you live in the Dublin area, mostly north of 161, you have heard the buzz of cicadas in your ears. This little creature, Brood X, has arrived in massive waves of discarded carcasses and red-eyed adults who just love to make noise up in the trees.

Entomologists tell us that they are mostly harmless and, while a nuisance for us, are a feast for the birds and other small creatures who roam around the area.

The noise is part of their mating ritual. But it is loud, and they do have a little bit of a science fiction look to them.

But to be honest, I like it. I like the weirdness of it, and that it only happens every 17 years. I like that it is something that changes our outdoor routines and makes us think about the life cycle of this insect. And, you have to admit, it is an amazing feat of nature!

I hope you hear a similar buzz around Prince of Peace these days. We are opening things up, welcoming a new pastor, planning summer events, and just generally trying to emerge out of our 15-month Covid cocoon.

Some things will be different with our “new normal.” Some things will remain the same. But I encourage all of you to roll with the changes. We’ve got lots of sorting out to do.

But in the meantime, Christ will be present among us, and his love will shape us to love one another.

And don’t forget, maybe all these cicadas are just praising the Lord. Psalm 148 – Let all creeping things praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!

In Christ,

Pastor John D. Morris
