Memorial Day

There is a lot going on this week! School is coming to a close, there are graduations and the parties that follow—I think we are all looking forward to a long weekend! Here in the community, the buzz is starting about the Memorial Golf Tournament that takes over Dublin with all the fun and frenzy that comes with it. Memorial Day is a sort of unofficial summer-starter holiday. But the day, like the Church’s celebration of All Saints Sunday, has a rich history and deep meaning.

Originally started as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a chance for us as a country to remember the people who have lost their lives serving in the military. More often than not, on Memorial Day, I attended a commemoration service in a small church in Sinai, SD. There I would watch my grandfather and grandmother, each with different roles in the American Legion, take time to remember these fallen military members. They would have a small service followed by a short drive to each of the two cemeteries for the playing of Taps and a gun salute. While small, this tradition continues to happen in many places around the country every year.

In the midst of your plans this weekend, I invite you in your own way to pause for a remembrance. Say a prayer not only for those who have died while serving, but also for the families who lost them, the friends that still miss them, and the communities that continue to honor their sacrifice.

God’s Peace,

Pastor Tim
