No one has ever accused me of being a runner. Obviously. Offensive linemen run less than all but the placekicker. Even that is debatable. But my admiration for runners, of all distances, runs deep. I know it isn’t easy, and good runners sacrifice so much in their training. All to be ready to go at the right moment.
All of that came together for me in the narthex two Sundays ago on Pentecost Day.
Pastor John had reminded us in his message that the Greek roots of our word ‘witness’ can also be translated ‘martyr.’ Witnesses to Christ, therefore, are those who die to self in order to live as/for Christ in the world. He briefly referenced Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” which continues “let us run with endurance the race that is set before us ...”
Moments after worship I was watching a replay on my phone in the narthex of Prince of Peace member Abby Steiner setting the 200 meter National Collegiate record with a run of 21.81! Watch it on YouTube! She was amazing. This old Hoosier was cheering crazily in the narthex for the University of Kentucky!
And don’t miss her third leg of the 4x400 either!
Elliot Cook, also a Prince of Peace member and running for the University of Oregon, finished 21st in 1500 meters at the same NCAA National competition with 3:44.47. That’s some serious stamina and speed! No link to view, but google him!
Congratulations to both, Abby & Elliot! And to all who run at any level, for sport or solitude. May you feel the joy and satisfaction of your efforts! Few things have filled me with more joy than crossing the finish line years ago at the Susan Komen and hearing them announce my dear Ann’s name. It was worth the training.
All this has me thinking about the process. It always begins with a first step, right?
This week in worship we’ll hear Jesus say “Follow me.” Indeed, the first step of any race can be the hardest, even running with Jesus. I’m so glad we are surrounded by a worshipping community like ours to encourage us to run our race.
Pastor Jim
