Singing the Season
There are so many things that signal that we are in the Christmas time of year: decorating, baking, our worship and activities at church. But the biggest sign that we are in Christmas, and the thing that happens at everything on that list, is music.
It would not seem right if those dulcet tones of Bing Crosby didn’t sing out White Christmas, or if you didn’t get the chance to sing the hymn Silent Night. Then there is the dancing that happens when the favorite holiday pop song comes on and makes you move.
I have so many memories of how music has impacted the way that I have experienced the season, and I am sure you do as well. I want to share just one: it happened last year in our sanctuary, and it was one of the most powerful musical experiences I’ve ever had.
Last year, my family and I were amid a busy season of learning about a new place and space. The Prince of Peace Christmas concert was coming up. We had so many things going on in our life that it would have been easy for us to justify missing the concert, but I had heard this was a great opportunity. So, we bundled the kids up and joined in the Christmas festivities. Towards the end of the concert, we as a congregation were invited to join in singing with all the rest of the musicians. As all the music filled the space, I found myself feeling so much joy to be part of the sound being created, so much so that I turned to Rachel next to me and Pastor John sitting behind me and said, “This must be what heaven sounds like.”
I say all of this because I do not want you to miss out on this wonderful experience. You may already have plans with folks; invite them to come along! You might feel tired of everything else happening in your life; come and be re-energized. You might not feel like a “choir concert”-type person; this is an experience for all, musically knowledgeable or not.
Our musicians at Prince of Peace, under the direction of the ever-so-talented Jeremy Bankson, have worked hard to create an experience you will not want to miss. So, mark your calendars today:
Prince of Peace Christmas Choir Concert
Sunday, December 11 at 4 pm
"Light and Life to All He Brings"
The image of light and the message of new life will outline this year’s Christmas concert which will feature our own Prince of Peace Choir, handbells and orchestra. We will hear the proclamation from Isaiah “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light…” and this message will usher in the joyous strains of “Gloria!” which the angels sang to proclaim the wondrous birth of Jesus, the Christ, born in a manger!
God’s Peace,
Pastor Tim
