Pet Blessing

O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures. (Psalm 104:24)

This past Sunday we had the chance to offer blessings to many beloved pets of our community. We witnessed the proverbial lion lying down with the lamb (though everyone stayed safely in their own containers!). This event is always a little fun and a little chaotic. Gathered on our church grounds were furry creatures and scaly creatures; creatures that jump and creatures that crawl; loud, excited creatures and timid, cuddly creatures. All were brought in love by their humans; all are beloved by their God. It is fun to mix it up for a church that usually has a lot of order in our events.

We have two cats in our household, and even though I am not their favorite human, I try my best to care for them and find comfort in their presence in our household. As we had the chance to bless each of these pets by name, it really struck me how close we grow to the furry creatures with whom we share our lives. The relationships we form over time have not only an effect on our daily lives, but they can also impact our spiritual lives. God’s non-human creatures accompany us through our lives. They comfort us when we are down or sick, as we do them. They inspire us with their unique ways of approaching the world. They bring smiles to our lips and friendship to our hearts. While they may never read a Bible, they can certainly embody God’s love and faithfulness in our lives.

As pastors, we know that the relationships our parishioners form with their furry companions are deep and transformational. If you ever get to a time when your pet is sick or has died, know that it is ok to call us with that anxiety or grief. We are happy to sit with you and offer a prayer and words of support in honor of any and all friends, human or not!

God’s Peace,

Pastor Tim

PS: If you missed the blessing, here’s one you can offer your pet yourself: May Almighty God bless and keep you, (insert pet name), in God’s care. Amen.
