Baptisms, Baths, & Bishops

Lent begins tomorrow with Ash Wednesday. We will honor that day with two worship services at Noon and at 7 pm.

Lent means “spring” but I like to think of it not just as a small stream of running water but also a reminder of baptism. Baptism, that promise of life with God forever, informs every moment of our life in the church. From making the sign of the cross, to the new water poured out for the sacrament, to a basic need of life, to the water that surrounds and reminds us of God’s love, baptism is an immersion into our life with God.

Lent is also a time to “come clean.” To confess our need for God and to admit to the ways that we have not been the people that we could be or need to be. As baptized Christians, we are always invited to wash in the promises of God’s love and remember the forgiveness that awaits us at the water.

This Lent will also bring a visit from our Bishop. Bishop Suzanne Dillahunt of the Southern Ohio Synod will be visiting us on the First Sunday in Lent, February 18.  She will bring us greetings from the Synod at both morning worship services. I encourage you to welcome her and thank her for her ministry on our behalf.

So there you have it. Baptisms, baths, and bishops. A great start to our six weeks of wading in baptismal waters.

And by the way . . . we just happen to also be studying baptism in our “By Heart” series.  Join us each week for a Bible study in person or on-line and hear about how God’s word stirred up with water brings us everlasting life.

In Christ,

Pastor John D. Morris
