April 9, 2024

April 9, 2024

I have been thinking about birthdays a lot this week (no reason whatsoever) and how we celebrate them.

For example, in Australia, they make fairy bread (white bread with butter and sprinkles). In Brazil, the birthday person gives the first piece of cake to someone important to them.

I would always choose a cheesecake over a conventional birthday cake and would choose Olive Garden for dinner.

Birthdays are a way to look back on the last year of life and celebrate what all has been done.

It’s a reminder that life changes through each stage and brings new adventures and challenges to look forward to.

I remember when I was growing up that people in their mid to late twenties were old and at a point where I would be settled into my life and routine.

That life would be “done,” and I would have gone on all the adventures I wanted to.

Oh how wrong I was.

I didn’t know all the things I would get to do or people I would meet that would have been unimaginable when I was a kid, like going to seminary.

I wouldn't have imagined feeling God’s call to ministry.

I am looking forward to all the adventures coming up in the next few years, like going to Greece, New Orleans, seeing my best friend get married this summer, and getting my MDiv.

And those are things I know about.

There are things this year left to be seen that will make it so much better and life fulfilling.

There’s a fear about growing older because there are changes in body and what we can do. We are told to find ways to stay youthful because that’s when life was the “best.”

But what if we change that to we get to have these changes that we didn’t get to do before? We get to have the best years when we are a little older and having new opportunities come to us now?

God gives us life and wants us to grow up to explore all that God had for us.

There will be difficulties that will come, and things that we don’t want to go through, but that’s part of getting older, too.

Life isn’t stagnant and isn’t meant to be. We get new experiences each year that bring us new life and help make our identity.

Challenges and experiences that make us who we are and appreciate how far we have come in this life.

Let’s embrace and be happy with growing up and changing each year we are here.

Cheers to birthdays.
