This year was my first time being exposed to Closet Cause here at Prince of Peace. The church was abuzz all week long with people bringing items in. We quickly transformed from a standard church building to a small then large Goodwill store. It really gave a different feel, and smell, to the church as I would walk around. After all is said and done, I have three takeaways from the event.
First, I really love the way that we rally around a cause with such dedication and purpose when we are not getting any of the monetary gains. We gave away all the money that we raised. This selfless form of service to others is a shining example of the way that we are a community of caring.
Second, I loved the community that was formed as I watched people from different services, ages, and parts of the church come together. It can be rare to have an event in the church that creates this sort of cross-pollination.
Third, there is a certain amount of care for creation that happens when we do this event. On a basic level, people give away the things they don’t use instead of trashing them. Even I was able to find a few “treasures” of things I was looking for but had not yet purchased. Even beyond this first level, there were other ways that care for creation happened: I saw refugees getting items that they needed, I heard about children’s books being donated to a mission in Honduras, I watched people being able to afford items that may have been a struggle otherwise.
As I look back at the week gone past, I hear Jesus say these words to us here at POP: “Well done, good and faithful servant(s).”
God’s Peace,
Pastor Tim
