By Heart:
Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism
By Heart is the new resource we will be using over the next 9 months to study Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. It will soon be available on the table just outside the sanctuary.
Like last year with The Story, we have assigned readings for each week that can be used in small groups, Bible studies, and with individual families.
Luther wrote the Small Catechism to help people learn the basics of the faith and identified five chief elements that are important for the Christian life:
The Ten Commandments
The Apostles’ Creed
The Lord’s Prayer
The Sacrament of Baptism
The Sacrament of Altar
Growing up Lutheran, many of us were encouraged to memorize these portions of the small catechism and to recite them “by heart” before the pastor and/or the congregation.
While I am not requiring anyone to memorize the Small Catechism, I do hope that these basics of the Christian faith will be known by you by heart by the end of our year of study.
More information about the study, bookmarks, and detailed schedule will be available this Thursday in Peace Signs and on the table near the sanctuary when the books arrive. Plan to join one of our many small groups or studies and learn Luther’s catechism By Heart.
In Christ,
Pastor John D. Morris
