Christmas Eve Choices
When Christmas falls on a Monday (as it does every 7 years or so), it wreaks havoc on our Christmas Eve Schedule . . . because it means that the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve are the same day.
For me, it just means more opportunities to sing Christmas carols, so I’m all good. But often, it means juggling a lot of family time. So here’s what I suggest:
1) Attend either 5:30 pm Saturday, December 23 or our one service on Sunday, December 24 at 10:30 am.
2) Pick a Christmas Eve Service that’s best for your family.
2:30 pm and 4:00 pm are specifically designed for young families – elementary school and younger. We have a children’s sermon (no big adult sermon) and try to keep the “excitement” to about 45 minutes.
6:00 pm and 8:00 pm are our big, festival, candlelight services with full choirs and instrumentation. At these services, we pull out all the stops as we celebrate the birth of Christ.
3) Then consider attending the 10:00 pm (Christ Mass) service either by yourself after one of the earlier services or just bring your adult children to this service. It is a more soft, contemplative, and meditative worship experience than our other services. We’ll have a chamber choir at this service and no brass instruments. It’s sort of a toned-down high mass.
4) And finally, join us on Christmas Morning at 10:30 am. This is what I call a “home game”. All the bustle and hustle of the previous day are caught up in the light of Christmas Day. We read the Christmas story according to the Gospel of John and bask in the wonder of his beautiful poetry.
So those are your choices. And whatever you choose, it will be filled with Christ’s love and light. Blessings!
