Crossing and X-ing Guards
Kids head back to school this week, and in our neighborhood (conveniently located between two elementary schools) I will get to greet all the new and old Crossing Guards.
Crossing Guards are the people who day after day in wind, rain, or snow are on the street corners to make sure kids are safe going to and from schools. Many of them have been doing it for years, so I have sort of a “Hi, how you doing this year?” relationship with several of them.
I’m thankful for the work they do and glad they are committed to a simple, but important, task of helping our children cross the streets.
I’ve also had several X-ing guards in my life. People who have helped me navigate through this world and reminded me of the cross in my life. Sunday School Teachers, Parents, God-Parents, Pastors, and other friends in the church have assisted me along the way.
And I have no doubt that I would have stumbled or fallen without them, or worst yet been blind sided by something that I didn’t see coming.
I’m thankful for all the people who have watched out for me and kept me on a path that ultimately led to the cross of Jesus Christ, and the life-saving power of his crucifixion and resurrection.
So let’s hear it for all the Crossing Guards and X-ing Guards among us. I know as we get older we don’t think we need them anymore. I know we think that we can cross the street by ourselves and can get through this life on our own without needing help from anyone.
But the truth is . . . there is hardly a day where I don’t need some help from someone. Thanks for helping me get across/a cross safely.
In the Cross of Christ,
Pastor John D. Morris
