Do You Believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I do.

But Luther says we need a lot of help to believe in the Holy Spirit – this wind from God that is living and moving among us. He says in the Catechism that we can’t even do it ourselves. We need God’s intervention just to get our faith going.

And yet, I’m glad for the Spirit’s movement among us. I trust its work more than my own.I’m always amazed as a pastor, in one place for more than 30 years now, how the Spirit always sneaks up on me.

That confirmand that I thought couldn’t wait to be done with everything church-related ends up being the President of Church Council in a church in another state.

That one sentence in my sermon that I wrote almost as a throw-away becomes the reason that someone reconnected with our congregation.

That person that I greeted in the parking lot as I was pulling out one day will literally change their life because of something that our church was able to do for them.

I never know exactly where the Spirit is moving and growing and challenging. But I believe it is, and most days I’m amazed at the ways that it is changing this world and changing me.
