Lent is upon us.

While it may seem like we just barely stepped into February, Lent is on our doorstep. Next Wednesday (February 22) will be Ash Wednesday with worship at Noon and 7:00 pm here at Prince of Peace.

After Ash Wednesday, we will gather every Wednesday night until Holy Week for a light meal (6:00 pm), a group study of The Story (6:30 pm), and Prayer Around the Cross (7:00 pm). Our Lenten time will also include a new fitness program (Tuesday Nights), our annual collection of Under Garments for the needy, as well as Holy Communion Instruction on Palm Sunday and Thank God It’s Good Friday on Friday, April 7. And we will add Morning Prayer to the Calendar for the Thursdays during Lent at 10:30 am.

Phew!!

That’s a lot of stuff.

But Lent is always more than just doing something. It is also a remembering. Just as we have our mortality rubbed into our forehead on Ash Wednesday, Lent stands as a signpost as we remember the sacrifice and death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It takes 40 days (plus Sundays) to make our Lenten Journey, but I’m not sure I’d have it any other way. I am never quite ready for Easter Sunday until I have journeyed to the cross once again, and spent the time I need during Lent to focus on what truly matters.

Lent is upon us.

We begin with Ashes and close with the new fire at the Easter Vigil. All of it coming toward us as we move to the Cross and remember once again how God in Jesus Christ has decided to love us.

In the Cross of Christ,

Pastor John D. Morris
