One of my favorite parts of doing ministry is leading youth servant trips. I literally could talk for hours about the transformations I have witnessed over 15 different trips (some of you have endured this). Faith formation, leadership of self and others, and exploration of unexplored personal horizons are at the core of a servant trip. Each year I try to craft an opportunity for our high schoolers to be able to live into these pillars. This year's theme is “Serving God’s Creation.”
This year we are heading to the Silver Valley in Idaho to work alongside Idaho Servant Adventures (ISA). We will work in an area that was economically devastated following the collapse of the silver industry. Along with serving, we will be having devotions and worship every day since ISA is part of Lutherhaven Outdoor Ministries. We will stay at an old forest service camp surrounded by some of the most stunning views of pines and mountains.
There are many ways to fund these trips. We ask our families to pay for a share, and we fundraise the rest through the generosity of the congregation. Last year, we made the leap to one big fundraiser event rather than a bunch of little ones throughout the year. It was a success, and so we are continuing the tradition: this Saturday (Feb 8) at 6:45 PM, we will have a baked potato bar and a live and silent auction.
This is not your ordinary potato bar: it will have pulled pork, chili, and all the rest of the very best toppings you can imagine. Along with the good food, we will have kid care downstairs. All of this is available for a free-will donation.
The live and silent auction will bring back some fan favorites along with a few new baskets. We have tickets to sporting events and musicals, we have fun dinner parties, handcrafted items from the congregation, pet baskets, and Ann and Pr. Jim put together an alternative potato basket that you will have to see. There is definitely something for everyone! Bring your competitive spirit and checkbook with you.
We cannot provide these amazing faith formation opportunities for our kids without the generosity and support of the rest of the congregation. Thank you for the response we have received in the past along with your gifts this Saturday.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Tim
