Holy Baptisms, Batman!

“I just love all these baptisms!”

That was something I heard from a parishioner as they were leaving worship this past Sunday. And it’s true, we have celebrated a remarkable number of baptisms during this Easter season, and it feels exactly right.  We say it often here at Prince of Peace: Easter is not just a day; it is a season. Because one Sunday simply isn’t enough to contain all that joy.

Baptism is one of the clearest ways we witness Easter in action. In the waters of baptism, God joins us to the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are washed, claimed, and given a brand-new identity as beloved children of God. Every baptism is a visible reminder that resurrection and I don’t just mean when cold water goes on a sleeping or smiling baby's head. It is not just something that happened to Jesus long ago; it is something God is doing right here and right now in the lives of our families and our congregation.

And the good news is: we’re not done yet.

This weekend, at our 10:30 a.m. service, we will also celebrate what many know as Confirmation. Its formal name is the Affirmation of Baptism, when our eighth graders publicly affirm the promises first spoken over them at the font. They are not graduating from faith, in fact far from it. They are stepping forward to say, “Yes, this faith is my own, and with God’s help, I intend to live it.”

Whether through the joyful cries of a newly baptized infant or the thoughtful voices of our confirmands, we are seeing Easter come alive among us. God is still creating new life, still calling disciples, and still reminding us that the tomb is empty and the future is full of hope.

Holy Baptisms, Batman! What a wonderful season to be the Church.

God’s Peace,
Pastor Tim
