How is your Wilderness going?

I
n this Lenten Season, I’ve been enjoying our “Wilderness” devotional.  I hope you have had a chance to use it and dwell in it for a time each day. The poetry and artwork have been particularly moving to me.

This winter has been a sort of wilderness time for me. It seems like I have had one medical issue after another . . . never serious . . . but constant. And then we have had a number of deaths in our congregation and in my personal life that have just been jarring.

And yet, this Lenten time of wilderness has been good for me, because it matches my mood. I’ve been a little lost, a little shaken, a little out-of-sorts, and a lot sad. And yet I still find that God comes to me in the midst of my brokenness.

When I feel crushed and shattered by the unpredictability of life, I also find that God in Jesus Christ is still by my side. I don’t always know how God manages to find me, but it’s often from an unexpected note, or a smile in the hallway, or hug from a friend, or even in the wording of a prayer or a sermon that lifts me up.

I was particularly comforted by the “Poem On Wilderness” found on page 5 of the Devotional. The author says, “Some days are designed to be the day we try again.” Then “begin again,” “begin again,” “begin again” is echoed throughout the poem. I love that and need that. And for me, beginning again is always as Christ is by my side.

With Christ,

Pastor John D. Morris
