Music of Bach and Mendelssohn

Lutherans proudly “claim” Johann Sebastian Bach as one of our own, and this coming Sunday, March 1at 4 PM you will have the chance to hear one of his many great Cantatas. His Cantata 38 is based on Psalm 130, “Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir” (Out of deep anguish I call to you). In addition to movements which feature our whole choir, several movements will feature our singers in solo, duet and trio movements. Complimenting Bach’s music will be an additional cantata by Felix Mendelssohn. Bach’s influence will be reflected in Mendelssohn’s work based on the chorale “If You Rely on God to Guide You.” Because Bach wrote his Cantata’s for worship services, these pieces will be offered in the context of Evening Prayer accompanied by strings and oboes.

Evening Prayer offers a wonderful opportunity to hear these reflective pieces. As we journey through a broken world in this season of Lent, let these wonderful works offer a message of hope, guidance and comfort. I hope to see you there!
