Our Concert Season Begins!
The Concerts at Prince of Peace Series begins this coming Sunday at 4 PM with organist Dr. John Schwandt sharing a delightful program to showcase the organ at Prince of Peace. It would be easy to think that because you here the organ each weekend in worship, why would one want to bother coming back to hear more of it? I’ll give you several reasons! - The first half of Dr. Schwandt’s program will include many well-loved hymn tunes. Despite the fact that we think of hymns as a musical idiom that we all sing together, there are COUNTLESS organ works based on these tunes! Some favorites on the program include Now Thank We All Our God, God of Grace and God of Glory, My Song is Love Unknown as well as several others. In addition there will be some beautiful “freely composed” works offered.
- Although you may be used to hearing Lucille and myself on a regular basis, every organist has a way of “orchestrating” the pieces they play. What a wonderful opportunity to hear Dr. Schwandt’s choices of sounds in this program.
- The second half will include the creation of a brand-new organ piece created “on the spot.” A small group will gather at intermission to pick several melodies that will be handed to Dr. Schwandt just before he creates a new organ symphony based on those themes. You might just here some familiar “non-church” tunes included!
- And finally, the concert will conclude with a special reception where an exciting announcement will be shared.
So… I hope to see you Sunday morning for worship, and I hope to see you Sunday afternoon at 4 PM for a delightful program. Jeremy Bankson, Director of Music |
