Throughout college and several years after, I participated in and lead camp ministry and what it means to do ministry in different settings. One of those roles would be leading counselors out on day camp and spending time with the congregations and the people who welcomed us into the space as leaders.
And what I always loved and enjoyed about being part of those ministries is the open hospitality that would be involved in those moments, not only to my counselors and myself but also to the campers who would join and be present in space during that week. The building would always be full of laughter and energy that could seem overwhelming at times, but there was always joy to those who are serving and those who are coming into the space.
I would always write thank you notes to those who welcomed us to be part of those communities every week, and a favorite verse I always wrote in these was Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” God is in everyone, and that hospitality and love of God given to strangers can go a long way and make impacts on them. For me, this portrays gratitude for those who welcomed everyone into the space for the week and that God is very much present in that space and time.
And as I stepped into and began at Prince of Peace this last week, I cannot help but think of the hospitality and open arms that I was given as a summer counselor and how it has been present here as well.
I walked into the building on Monday and immediately felt God’s presence and love here in this place and that this community is excited for all that God is doing. There is this desire to love and care for one another that is exciting to see, and that I was immediately welcomed with open arms reminds me that I am in a sacred place and that God has called me here for the next part of my journey and call.
I am grateful for all those who have shared with me their stories and love of God and this place. May God continue to bless and be present in this place as we welcome this next year with excitement and hospitality.
