We are a few weeks into The Story. How is it going?

One of my favorite hymns is "I Love to Tell the Story." Especially the third verse:

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

It has been very fun for me as a pastor to listen to the different ways the congregation has been engaging scripture through The Story. One of the most impressive parts are the very thoughtful questions that people have as these old, old stories become new again. Much as when you re-watch a movie you loved as a kid, you hear and see it in a new way.

Here are a few questions and maybe you have had the same ones:

•    How did these people live to be so old? - Confirmation student
•    Which of the creation stories is true? – Member of Bible Study
•    What makes God, God? - Confirmation student
•    What relationship do you think Isaac and Abraham had after his near sacrifice? - Confirmation Parent
•    Have you noticed that many of the lead characters so far are not very savory people? - Men’s Ministry participant

Up to this point, we have moved from creation to the story of Abraham and Sarah, and now we are in the story of Jacob and his sons. Three chapters in and yet we have not made it out of Genesis, but it feels like we are moving so fast and could talk for hours about sections of each chapter.

The opening question is not rhetorical, I would love to have a cup of coffee or beverage of choice if you ever want to chat more. It is one of my great joys in life to walk with people as they dig into scripture and think about its impact on their life and those around them.

God’s peace

Pastor Tim
